Christmas at Frozen Falls by Kiley Dunbar: promo post

It’s the time of year when the first of this year’s crop of Christmassy books start to appear. Here’s one that looks like a lot of fun. I haven’t been able to review it unfortunately since for whatever reason my request for the book from Netgalley was unsuccessful, but here’s a promotional post for it.

Christmas at Frozen Falls

Christmas magic can thaw the coldest of hearts…

Sylvie Magnusson is going to be lonely this Christmas. Instead of jetting off for her
sunshine honeymoon, she’s freezing at home in Cheshire. Guess that’s what happens when your fiancé dumps you a week before your wedding…

Sylvie’s best friend, Nari, plans a trip to see the Northern Lights and get Sylvie’s mojo back. But as their Lapland getaway approaches, Sylvie realises that Frozen Falls is the hometown of Stellan Virtanen, her dreamy Finnish ex-boyfriend, the one that got away. Even though he actually ran away, and Sylvie never understood why…

Luckily, when they meet, Stellan’s still gorgeous – and her heart is warmed when he shows her the romantic delights of Lapland (as well as some seriously adorable Husky puppies). But when she returns to England can she really leave Stellan behind? Or will she find that her heart belongs in the frozen North?

Curl up with the perfect cosy Christmas read this winter. Fans of Sarah Morgan and
Carole Matthews will adore this feel good, heart-warming romcom.

The Bistro by Watersmeet Bridge by Julie Stock: a book that will have you rushing back for seconds!

Synopsis

When Olivia goes to manage Finn’s failing bistro, will they end up sharing a table for two, or will it be a recipe for disaster?

Olivia Fuller longs to manage one of the restaurants in her father’s chain and to break free to live the independent life she’s wanted for so long. When her father finally puts his trust in her and sends her to a failing restaurant in Devon, she’s confident she can prove herself capable of doing the job.

Finn Anderson is about to lose his beloved seaside bistro, unless the bank can find a buyer to dig him out. When George Fuller offers Finn a deal, he has no choice but to accept if he wants any chance of getting his bistro back one day. And then the new manager arrives…

Even after meeting the prickly chef and discovering his complete lack of business skills,

Olivia is confident she can turn the struggling business round. But as Olivia and Finn start working together, a mutual attraction develops between them, and soon, nothing is going according to Olivia’s plan.

When there’s a real chance that the bistro might be sold off, Olivia and Finn determine to fight for it, united by their hard work and their growing feelings for each other.

But can they save the bistro and be together, or does destiny have a different path in mind?

A feel-good contemporary romance set in a bistro beside the sea in Devon.

My review

This is a book that will have you wanting to go back for seconds!

This is a very enjoyable, uplifting, interesting romcom. It has its tensions and teeterings on the brink of disaster, but that’s all part of this genre. The course of true love, just like life, never runs smoothly.

We have two voices in this book – Olivia’s and Finn’s. That’s the cherry on this already scrumptious cake. The counterpointing of their perceptions of each other and the ongoing situation is deliciously delightful and really adds to the story.

The author has a sure and light style, and a wonderful imagination in coming up with this lively, unique story. Everything, from the catchy, rhythmic title and joyful cover, to the beautifully described setting, to the sharp, snappy dialogue, to the rounded and complex characters we encounter is attractive and enjoyable.  It’s a positive delight to read.

Baby Daddy Mystery by Daisy Pettles: just brilliant!

Synopsis

It’s Spring in Pawpaw County, Indiana. Everybody has a bad case of hanky-panky pants. Senior sleuths Ruby Jane Waskom and Veenie Goens are on the run, chasing down cheating heart Jezebels and shaking child support out of deadbeat baby daddies.

Everybody in the small town of Knobby Waters knows Avonelle Ollis, cantankerous President of the First National Bank. After Avonelle’s husband, esteemed dentist William Apple, passes away, she receives a child support letter from a self-proclaimed mistress. Suspicious, she hires Ruby Jane and Veenie, of the Shady Hoosier Detective Agency, to determine if her late husband was a philandering baby daddy.

The case seems simple until Avonelle’s son, Bromley, heir to his father’s dental empire, and well-known king of the Pawpaw County Hanky Panky Husbands Club, pops up dead in a scarecrow costume. No sooner does the crime-cracking duo get sucked into solving Bromley’s death than Fussy Jones, Commander of the White River Boat and Gun Club, is found with a gig in his chest, literally dead in the water.

When a mysterious new Romeo rolls into town and begins seducing the ladies out at Leisure Hills Retirement Village Veenie’s father, Pappy Sneed, calls for help to retain his reputation as an oldster stud puppy. Ruby Jane bemoans that no one in Pawpaw County can keep their pants on or their skirts down as her own grown daughter, Joyce, begs for help chasing down her philandering husband.

The mounting romantic mysteries come to a surprise head as the senior sleuths outrun shotgun showers to close in on the answers at the Moon Glow Motor Lodge, the Original Home of Hillbilly Hanky Panky. Veenie and Ruby Jane have to buy an extra case of Ben Gay and a buttload of BBs just to keep up with the romantic excitement in this humorous crime classic.

My review

Well, this book is an absolute hoot. It’s brilliant, packed full of wit, comedy and delightfully eccentric characters.
Ruby Jane and Veenie are private investigators working for Harry Shades, whose inability to resist women means he’s temporarily had to leave town. The two mature ladies therefore take on a case concerning the Apple family – or rather, cases. They throw themselves into their duties with energy and determination, and whilst their means might be a little unconventional they’re certainly effective.

The plot bubbles with cleverness, with just the right amount of craziness, and as I’ve mentioned the people we meet in the pages of this novel are wonderful, whether it’s wonderfully awful or wonderfully genuine. The humour dances off the pages and it’s impossible not to chuckle as you absorb this madcap, exciting and entertaining story.

I Will Follow Him by Holly Tierney-Bedord: a lively summer novella

I Will Follow Him

A bachelor party on a cruise ship. What could go wrong?

When private detective Francie is hired to spy on a groom-to-be as he and his bachelor party set sail for the Caribbean, she thinks she’s landed herself a week of paid vacation. Between lounging in the sun and sipping margaritas, she just needs to–best case scenario–report back that he’s on the up and up, or–the unfortunate, more likely scenario–snap a few photos of her target in compromising positions, buy a box of sympathy chocolates for her client, and then collect her pay along with a nice golden suntan.

Blame it on the island breezes or the alcohol, but within hours of setting sail, Francie’s leisurely vacation gets complicated when she starts making careless mistakes. Like accidentally becoming friends with the groom and falling for his best man.

Can she get herself and her mission back on track, or has she blown her cover and possibly even her career?

My review

This is a lovely,  lively, summery read. Actually, you could read it anytime but summer is when we think travelling in general, and more exciting things like cruises in particular.

This novella is part of a series but you don’t need to have read the other books to enjoy this one.

The characters are all great – and we get the full range from awful to awesome. They’re all believable, intriguing people and it’s great fun to get to know them all a bit better. Our heroine Francie is perfect. She’s motivated, well-intentioned, loyal and caring, but has her flaws and they only serve to make her even more likeable.

The plot is fresh and entertaining, and definitely clever. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable story. It has a super, eye-catching cover and is very well presented.

Le Tour de Love by Lilac Mills: a romcom tour de force

Le Tour de Love

“…the opportunity of a lifetime.”

When physiotherapist Molly Matthews is offered a dream job by a guy who shaves his legs and has an obsession with his bicycle, she has serious doubts about accepting. But, as she keeps telling herself, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime and she’ll never get another chance like this. So, she does what anyone in her position would do – she agrees to join a professional cycling team for the most prestigious race in the cycling world – The Tour de France.

The reality, though, isn’t exactly what she had anticipated; instead of eating out at restaurants in pretty French villages and spending her free time lounging around the hotel pool, Molly finds herself living out of a suitcase for three weeks, massaging eight pairs of sweaty legs, administering ice baths and treating saddle sores.

And neither did she anticipate falling for a gorgeous, passionate, professional rider by the name of Alexander Duvall…

My review

View of vector evening paris from the cafe, eps 10

I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed other books by this author so I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this story, especially as I’m a keen cyclist and I live in France! And I enjoyed every word.

It’s a lively, lovely romcom featuring physiotherapist Molly and pro cyclist Alex. The author obviously did a lot of research into the tough world of cycle racing. She admits she may have taken the odd liberty or two – and isn’t that what most fiction does! – but I think she conveys very clearly how hard the riders train, how brutal and dangerous the racing is, and how committed everyone in each cycle team is. I confess I was a tiny bit impatient with Molly initially when she needed everything cycling-related explained to her, but not everyone shares my enthusiasm for the sport and so knows what the various terms mean! And anyway, Molly’s bafflement at all things bikey is a clever way of getting the information across that readers need to fully appreciate the story.

As you might expect from a story centred on a bike race, and the most famous one in the world at that, the action is swift. Events take place over not much more than a month. It’s true to say that love whisks both Alex and Molly off their feet.

But, like the cobblestones of the Champs Elysées, which is where the final stage of the race takes place each year, the course of true love can be bumpy. It wouldn’t be a proper romcom if everything went smoothly from start to finish anyway!

This is a really super, summery read, and very topical since Le Tour sets off for the 106th time on 6th July, from Brussels. Don’t miss it, and definitely don’t miss this book.

Author Bio

Lilac spends all her time writing, or reading, or thinking about writing or reading, often to the detriment of her day job, her family, and the housework. She apologises to her employer and her loved ones, but the house will simply have to deal with it!

She calls Worcester home, though she would prefer to call somewhere hot and sunny home, somewhere with a beach and cocktails and endless opportunities for snoozing in the sun…

When she isn’t hunched over a computer or dreaming about foreign shores, she enjoys creating strange, inedible dishes in the kitchen, accusing her daughter of stealing (she meant to say “borrowing”) her clothes, and fighting with her husband over whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher.

My review

There are so many things about this book that make it light and refreshing. The writing does with its deftness and cleverness, its changing viewpoint and its use of the present tense. There are text messages here and there which help keep the tone modern and breezy.

What’s also very refreshing is Lana’s attitude towards Christian. She is totally unaware of his ‘celeb’ status, so to him he’s just another, although better looking than many, bloke. So she’s not bowled over by his possessions and wealth. In fact, his selfishness over his money in the typical conspicuous over-consumption of real-life celebs is decidedly off-putting. It’s been all about him having up to now.

Lana breathes that fresh air into this life that he needs. He starts to see that he should be thinking about others and the environment, and also that he needs to put his best interests first. Money isn’t everything.

This is a delicious romcom with misunderstandings, clashings of different lifestyles, friendships, loyalty and betrayals, temporary heartbreak and then permanent happiness, all the standard ingredients that make this such an enjoyable genre. However, there’s nothing standard in the way Camilla Isley has mixed these ingredients together and sprinkled her originality over them. I like how there’s a more serious message there too regarding the hedonistic lifestyles of people that we really shouldn’t admire yet somehow do.

The book is as sparkly as those stars in the title!

About the author

Camilla is an engineer turned writer after she quit her job to follow her husband on an adventure abroad.

She’s a cat lover, coffee addict, and shoe hoarder. Besides writing, she loves reading—duh!—cooking, watching bad TV, and going to the movies—popcorn, please. She’s a bit of a foodie, nothing too serious. A keen traveler, Camilla knows mosquitoes play a role in the ecosystem, and she doesn’t want to starve all those frog princes out there, but she could really live without them.

My review

This is a really sweet and enjoyable romcom but with some serious stuff going on too. However, it’s so sensitively and engagingly written that it’s not worrying or depressing. The possibility of not having long to live focusses our heroine’s mind on the positive, and she sweeps us along with her. We can’t feel sorry for her because she’s seizing the day with such gung-ho enthusiasm.

There’s a host of wonderful comedy, exuberant escapades and fascinating characters awaiting us in the novel. It’s utterly absorbing and you just can’t put the book down once you start reading. The author has a deft touch and it’s a pleasure to read this uplifting, inspiring book.

The story is clever and imaginative, funny and touching. In summary, utterly delightful.

I’m so pleased to have discovered this author and I will most certainly be reading a lot more of his books.

A Bakery at the Little Duck Pond by Rosie Green: wonderfully enjoyable

Synopsis

Ellie’s dreams of opening a bakery in Sunnybrook are finally coming true and best friends Fen and Jaz are happily rallying round, helping her to plan a fabulous grand opening day. Everything in their garden seems to be rosy – until the arrival of a newcomer brings chaos to the village and tests relationships to the limit. Can the bakery succeed in the face of such upheaval? And more importantly, can firm friendships survive?

My review

This is another lovely romcom from this prolific author. She’s created a wonderful world for us in her Little Duck Pond Café series, and is keeping up her high standards and originality with each book.
This time we focus on the adventures of Katje aka Kate and Madison. Due to a muddle, they’ve both been offered the same job at the bakery and have a trial run each. This is rather clever and reflects the popular trend in reality shows of someone having to leave after a particular ordeal! There are plenty of personality clashes between these two rivals.
There’s lot of fun too, wonderful interactions between the other characters and a very cosy, warm atmosphere is created despite the tension at the bakery. The story makes for a quick and delightfully enjoyable read.

Rosie Green has been scribbling stories ever since she was little. Back then they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by ‘the baddies’. Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger involved at all, unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.

Rosie’s brand new series of novellas is centred on life in a village café. Confetti at the Little Duck Pond Cafe will be the sixth in the series

Probably the Best Kiss in the World by Pernille Hughes: lively and lovely

Synopsis

Jen Attison likes her life Just So. But being fished out of a canal in Copenhagen by her knickers is definitely NOT on her to do list. From cinnamon swirls to a spontaneous night of laughter and fireworks, Jen’s city break with the girls takes a turn for the unexpected because of her gorgeous, mystery rescuer.

Back home, Jen faces a choice. A surprise proposal from her boyfriend, ‘boring’ Robert has offered Jen the safety net she always thought she wanted. But with the memories of her Danish adventure proving hard to forget, maybe it’s time for Jen to stop listening to her head and start following her heart…

My review

Carlsberg may have changed its famous advertising slogan but it’s so well-established that it’ll be around in collective memory for a long while to come. It’s fun that it’s been adapted for the title of this book which, very appropriately, is set in Denmark and includes a brewery.

Jen is our heroine, but her sister Lydia isn’t so far behind. Both are very strong characters but Jen is somewhat blinkered by being over-organised. She feels safe when life is predictable and going to plan. She’s set to marry a very sensible, equally organised man, until a girls’ trip to Copenhagen totally upsets the apple cart.

As well as her close relationship to her sister, Jen has a small group of best friends. Their interactions are every bit as important as those of our heroine with the gorgeous Jakob, who fishes Jen out of a canal by her underwear. Who wouldn’t be humiliated by that? This event is key to not only Jen’s eventual happiness, but to her self-development as it makes her ask herself questions and open her eyes to her life, and to the wider world.

This book is lively, lovely and uplifting and offers a big portion of romance too. It’s fresh and fun, and is definitely – not just probably – worth reading!
