Trust Me by K J McGillick: riveting and enthralling

Trust Me

Sex. Power. Murder.

Dr. Gabriel Blackwell and his wife Sandra Blake have it all. He’s a brilliant thoracic surgeon. She’s a high-powered attorney with family money. Their lives are as loving as they are glamorous.

Or are they?

When a nurse Dr. Blackwell works with is brutally murdered, the questions fly. Who would want to kill this woman and why? When an autopsy reveals the woman was pregnant, all signs point to Dr. Blackwell. Just what was her relationship with him?

Whispers about a scandalous sex club surface. How many other lovers are there? Are any of them safe? How far would he go to protect his reputation?

Tragedy strikes again as Sandra Blake is found dead floating in their pool. Dr. Blackwell now finds himself on trial for two murders. Facing life in prison, Dr. Blackwell will grasp at any straw to preserve his freedom.

Any straw.

Is anyone innocent? Is anyone safe?

My review

I always really enjoy this author’s books. Every time she presents us with a new and fascinating background to the intriguing action. This time there’s a medical setting which is extremely interesting, and that’s not the only insider’s view we get. There are glimpses into the legal world, and also those of art and antiquarian books. I love how this talented author uses her experiences to add such richness to her writing.

As you’d guess from the title, the main theme is all about trust – about knowing who to trust and when, assuming you can at all. That applies to both the reader and the characters: who can either we or they depend on. Who is actually reliable? Furthermore, the various characters all face assorted trials which really test them as the ingenious plot unfolds. You simply can’t guess what’s going to happen, which keeps you completely riveted.

The pace is brisk with a lot going on, but the author still finds time to develop characters, give us detailed settings and throw in some beautiful imagery.

An extremely polished and enthralling novel, which is impossible to put down once you start reading.
