Finding Claire Fletcher: An Intelligently Written and Powerful Novel

I’m delighted to be one of the stopping points in Lisa L Regan’s Innovative Online virtual book tour with her debut novel Finding Claire Fletcher.

Finding Claire Fletcher by Lisa L Regan is a very powerful, emotional and suspenseful novel, tackling head-on the difficult issue of child abduction and abuse. From the very beginning we’re gripped, as we discover in the first few pages that one of the people trying to find Claire is Claire herself. As the story unfolds we learn that she was abducted at the age of fifteen and brutalised by her abductor. She’s still in his clutches ten years later when Detective Connor Parks bumps into her. His divorce has just come through and spends the night with Claire. She gives him her address but when he calls there he finds Claire’s family who lost her a decade ago and presume she’s dead. Here’s a mystery that needs solving but people that get drawn in by Claire have ended up dead in the past. Is Detective Parks taking on more than he can handle?
Throughout the novel we swap viewpoints between the third person and the first person from Claire’s point of view. This works extremely well, not only keeping the reader’s interest but proving an efficient way to tell what is a complicated story. The extra depth gained from sharing Claire’s view on events lends the novel great impact. It’s also raw as we get to see some of what Claire went through – the horror and suffering that has made her into what and who she is now – Lynn as well as Claire. Claire is an incredibly complex character, and all the other people we meet in the story are rounded and human and convincingly portrayed. Parks is flawed but he’s genuine and a dedicated cop who can’t let go of this mystery. The more he finds out, the more he needs to get to the bottom of it, whatever the risk.
Thought-provoking is an understatement for this book. It makes you think long and hard about issues you’d rather not have to. But the author draws you so strongly into the events in this novel that you don’t have a choice. This is an intelligently and skilfully written story that is a rewarding yet challenging read.
